No Way Out was the twentieth pay-per-view (PPV) event under the In Your House name. It took place on February 15, 1998 at the Compaq Center in Houston, Texas and was presented by Western Union. It was the first of a series of In Your House events which later became the title of annual PPVs, replacing the method at the time of making new names for all events aside from the 'Big Four' (the Royal Rumble, WrestleMania, SummerSlam and the Survivor Series) and King of the Ring. However, because later events did not take place in Texas, it was truncated to No Way Out and would not become a regular feature until 2000. Shawn Michaels did not appear in the main event as advertised, owing to a severe back injury that resulted in his first retirement after the following month's WrestleMania XIV. He was replaced by Savio Vega. The main event was an "unsanctioned" 8 man tag match featuring Steve Austin, Owen Hart, Cactus jack, and Chainsaw Charlie vs. HHH, Savio Vega, Billy Gunn, and Road Dogg.

WWE No Way Out of Texas: In Your House Reviews

  • This one's funny to watch from a retrospective standpoint
by nickroosa on 22 July 2005
1 out of 1 people found the following review useful:
A fan of the WWE today, in 2005, wouldn't even began to recognize the WWF that was 1998. Not that many guys on this tape are around today: HHH, JBL, Kane, Rock (he's still in the RAW intro, so I guess he counts), and that's really it.
As for the stars of today and where they were in 1998...Chris Benoit? In WCW. Rey Mysterio? Ditto, as was Eddie Guerrero, Chris Jericho, Booker T, and Big Show. John Cena? Probably in college. Batista? I'd say a bouncer. Kurt Angle? Trying to make a living outside of wrestling. Edge? In the Canadian and Northeast independents, teaming with Christian. In other words, if you're looking for these guys on the '98 version of No Way Out, you're out of luck.
What you do get on this show: a great main event between the makeshift team of Steve Austin, Owen Hart (RIP), Cactus Jack, and Terry Funk against the pre-DX team of HHH and the New Age Outlaws, along with Savio Vega. You also get pre-JBL Bradshaw taking on Jeff Jarrett; take a look at Bradshaw on this tape and look at JBL today and you almost can't connect the two. (Jarrett's defending the NWA North American title on this show; today he runs NWA:TNA.) And you see the Rock, pre-Hollywood and a member of the Nation of Domination, with the CLASSIC old Intercontinental championship belt. I miss that belt; imagine how great Carlito (probably in middle-school back in '98, as young as he is) would look with the old I-C belt. Now that would be COOL! Is this show worth buying? For workrate, not really. For a solid waste of 2 1/2 hours and to see how the WWF (not WWE) did things back in 1998, then get this tape, and also get the '98 Royal Rumble and WrestleMania 14. After writing this review, I almost feel nostalgic and want to see this show myself...

    1. The Headbangers Vs. Marc Mero/Artist Formely known as Goldust - Sable finally turn on Mero, she looks really scary. 7/10
    2. WWF Light-Heavyweight Title Match: Pantera Vs. Champ-Taka Michinoku - There was some high fly action, but i don't know, something was missing. 7.5/10
    3. Quebecers Vs. The Godwinns - And so what? 6/10
    4. WWF NWA North American Title Match: Champ-Jeff Jarrett Vs. Bradshaw - DQ ending, pity when we are in Texas. But Jarrett isn't bad performer... 6.5/10
    5. Faarooq/Mark Henry/Kama/D lo Brown/The Rock Vs. Ken Shamrock/Ahmed Jonhson/Chainz/DOA Shamrock over Rock:) But shame, he was Intercontinental champ and lost almost everything. 6.5/10
    6. Vader Vs. Kane - Yes Vader with moonsault and cheating strategy, even Vader Bomb and Kane kicked-out everything and get clean victory! Legend was born! (I'm sorry a little bit for Vader) 8.5/10
    7. Owen Hart/Mankind/Stone Cold Steve Austin/Terry Funk Vs. Triple H/Road Dogg/Billy Gunn/Savio Vega - Austin scored again, no surprise. 7.5/10
  • An average event, but progress was rapidly being made as well for the WWF

No Way Out in Texas (02.15.98)
Live from Houston, TX; Compaq Center
Announcers: Jim Ross & Jerry Lawler
    Attendance 16,110
Shawn Michaels politicked his way out of the match, so DX has to find a new partner. OK. I lied. He was ACTUALLY injured for once due to aggravating his back at The Royal Rumble in 98. I have a word limit, so sadly I can't do play by play for you all
Marc Mero & TAFKAG (Goldust) (W/Sable & Luna) Vs The Headbangers (½*)
The Headbangers pull off the Bella Twin Switch to get the victory with an inside cradle.
Thoughts: VERY long and downright boring. The only person this crowd gave a damn about was Sable and she was sequestered in the back for 90% of this match. Sable's dissension with Mero would lead to a split and stardom for her
Kevin Kelly is standing by backstage with The Jackal. He has a prophecy and that's whoever is DX's partner will bring down a cataclysm of mythic proportions.
Michael Cole is in the locker room with Owen Hart. Owen doesn't care who DX's partner is. He tells Stone Cold to stay out of his way. That way there won't be a problem. He does have a problem with Hunter Hearst Helmsley, though. Just because he's European Champion, doesn't change a thing
Thoughts: Succinct and to the point. I also loved that WWE was acknowledging Owen and Austin's heated past
    Light Heavyweight Championship
Taka Michonoku © Vs Pantera (***1/4)
Taka retains the title with the Michonoku Driver
Thoughts: This deserves to be rated higher, it should be near the **** star range, but The Lawler's commentary overshadowed everything and made things unbearable. I'm not a fan of Jerry Lawler or his kid. Both annoy me as heels or faces. Christopher was tolerable in Too Cool, but that's it
The Quebecers Vs The Godwins (¾*)
The Godwins win: Via clothesline from Henry Godwin, whilst Phineas Godwin picks up the pin
Thoughts: Dull, dull, dull and COMPLETELY Heatless. The crowd was dead for 85% of the whole match. This is why heels vs heels rarely work
Jim Cornette is with Jeff Jarrett in the back. He's taking on Bradshaw and Cornette says Jarrett can end Bradshaw with The Figure Four. Jarrett says nobody can perfect The Figure Four like him. He's slowly but surely reverting back to his gimmick in the WWF from 94/96
    NWA Championship
Jeff Jarrett © (W/Jim Cornette, Barry Windham & Rock & Roll Express) Vs Bradshaw (*1/4)
Bradshaw wins by DQ when Jarrett gets caught with Cornette's tennis racket. LOD saved Bradshaw from a beat down afterwords
Thoughts: The match was alright. I didn't hate it, but I certainly didn't like it. Bradshaw looked like a bad ass on a number of occasions; it's just too bad he didn't take off, at least back then
Triple H & Chyna says EVERYONE wants to be a part of DX. He says DX is the only true franchise in the wrestling industry, and nobody can take DX's place. He declares it will be a handicapped match. Well. After the screw job debacle, yep; there were those NWO dudes as well
Dok Hendrix is with The Nation. The Rock starts to speak up, but Farooq cuts him off and isn't pleased at The Rock stealing spotlight
    War of Attrition
The Nation Of Domination (Rocky Maivia, Farooq, D-Lo Brown, Kama Mustafa & Mark Henry) Vs Ken Shamrock, The DOA (Skull, 8-Ball & Chainz) & Ahmed Johnson (**3/4)
Shamrock gets the win by making The Rock tap out with the ankle lock
Thoughts: Not too shabby. It had it's moments of enjoyment, and a fair amount of lulls as well. I'd say it's above average and it furthered the slow friction between Rock and Farooq extremely well
Steve Austin doesn't give two craps about who the mystery partner is. He just wants to have fun whooping someone's ass in Texas.
    Vader Vs Kane (W/Paul Bearer)(*)
Kane wins with a tombstone. He also caves Vader's face in with a wrench after the match.
Thoughts: The match was crappy, and Kane no soled everything. It was here to serve one purpose, make Kane look like a monster, not put on a 5 star match. They accomplished getting Kane over
Unsanctioned 8 Man Tag Team Match; NO DQ
Stone Cold Steve Austin, Owen Hart, Cactus Jack & Terry Funk Vs Triple H (W/Chyna), The New Age Outlaws & Savio Vega (****1/4)
Austin gets the pin with a stunner on Road Dog. Chyna provokes Austin, so Austin stuns her (HUGE POP!)
Thoughts: WOW. It was repetitive at one point. That changed in a hurry. This was one of the craziest brawls, ever, and it still holds up extremely well today. It was all over the place and an absolute blast to witness. The crowd reaction for Austin was insane and shockingly enough he was nowhere near his peak. My only regrets about this match are that Shawn couldn't compete, and Owen Hart didn't get enough ring time for my liking. This was all about Stone Cold. And this is one of the reasons why he is so beloved
Final Thoughts: I wanna give it a recommendation, and I will. The crazy main event is worth the purchase or the watch alone, but you'll have to go through a lot of crap to get there. Everything was built up perfectly, but I was also tempted to snooze on many occasions. Bare through the lame stuff, you'll get a couple of decent things, and thank me later when you wake up for the main event. Stone Cold was officially the #1 man in the company and it was fun to watch

  • Effective filler show

There was no title match on this show, in fact WWE CHampion Shawn Michaels, who had suffered a career ending back injury the month before, did not compete at all on the PPV.
The night started off with a barely passable tag team match won by the Headbagers (Mosh and Thrasher) over the team of Goldust and Marc Mero. Mero was fading fast in the WWE and Goldust with Luna didn't go anywhere. Not the best way to start a PPV.
Next up saw WWE Light Heavywight Champion Taka Michinoku retain the title winning a decent match against Pantera. Even at this early stage, it was obvious that the WWE's attempts to build a little man division was not really working.
Next was another dull tag match which saw the Godwinns (Henry and Phineas) defeat the Quebecers (Jacques Rougeau and Pierre Oullet). I remember being so sick of the Godwinns by early 1998 and I think there were plenty of fans who agreed with me.
For a brief period in 1998 the NWA North American Championship found its way onto WWE PPVs. Jeff Jarrett was the NWA champion at that time and he was appearing regularly in the WWE. Now here's some trivia, his opponent that day was Justin Bradshaw, who would later go onto have one of the longest WWE Title runs ever as JBL. This was his first shot at a singles title on PPV and he won by DQ after interference from Jarrett's manager Jimmy Cornette. Not much of a match.
There was a lot going on in our next match, a ten man war of attrition which saw the good guys Ken Shamrock, Ammed JOhnson and the Disciples of the Apocalypse (Chaniz, Skull and 8-ball) defeat the Nation of Domination (Farooq, The Rock, D Lo Brown, Kama Mustafa and Mark Henry). The story here was that Shamrock was feuding with the Rock over the Intercontinental Championship, Johnson had been feuding with the Nation for years and there was growing tension between the leader of the Nation Farooq and The cocky young Rock. Anyway this match broke down several times before the big finish which saw Shamrock put the Rock into the ankle lock, forcing him to submit. After the match, The Rock and Farooq shoved each other and the Rock stormed off. Farooq called him back and the Rock grudgingly returned to the ring in a show of solidarity and so the tension had resided for now.
The next match saw Kane continue his destructive pillaging of the WWE's mid card, as he defeated Vader without too much trouble here. Vader actually left on a stretcher after being hit with a wrench. NOt a great match.
This led us into the fun main event which saw the good guys Steve Austin, Owen Hart, Cactus Jack and Chainsaw Charlie defeat D-Generation-X and friends (Triple H, Savio Vega, Road Dogg Jesse James and Bad Ass Bill Gunn) in a fun match with some elements of a streetfight thrown in. It was entertaining and ended with Stone Cold stunning Jesse James to get the pin. Styone Cold then stunned Gunn for good measure and then hit Chyna with one too after she got in his face.
Wow, Shawn Michaels may need more help than just his DX buddies if he wanted to retain his title at Wrestlemania in a month. This was a good little filler show that effectively bridged the gaps to one of the biggest and most important PPVs in WWE history.

You will probably only see such great events in the WWF. This video picksup right after the royal rumble. I watched this and I was amazed. There is a Hardcore fight, a lightheavyweight fight, and a 8-man tag match. If I were you I would either rent or buy this video

This is'nt the best Wrestling show i've ever seen , but it definitely is'nt the worst either . It has a few bad matches , but the main event, and a few others , more than make up for it . We see tremendous athleticism in the Taka Mitchinoku V Pantera Match , a first look at Kane in his match against Vader , and mayhem in the survivor series type match . If you're a Wrestling fan , you might consider watching this .
